What has the wave of Adult Colouration got to do with Alpha brain waves?

Achieving Alpha state: Creating Serenity

What is the Alpha state, you ask? Our normal activity level is in Beta state, and in many instances we operate in this state for most of our day. Stress builds up and affects us internally, which can lead to anxiety, depression and insomnia.

As part of our Emerging Leaders program we work with a Neuroscientist, who helps candidates understand how to manage pressure, de-stress and slow the brain wave frequencies by accessing their Alpha brain wave frequencies.

So how do we move to the resting Alpha state?

In a digital world it means going off line at intervals during the day, even if it is only for 5 minutes at a time.

Breathing and relaxation reduce our brain wave frequency.

A recent exciting innovation is colouring.

I was given an adult Colouration book, by my colleague, and commenced using it in the summer holidays.

I found it really absorbing and relaxing, particularly experimenting with colour shades and combinations.  In order to strengthen my cross brain function and elasticity, it was suggested that I use my opposite hand.

Initially, I found this quite strange, however it has increased my dexterity.

I have enjoyed working within and outside the shapes strengthening my right hand (as a natural left hander).  I started with the shapes that really resonated with me, the flowers the water and the birds. Later I would just open the book and begin on the page I’d found and have created some beautiful soothing images.

It has become a relaxing form of meditation.

Even though I am creative in terms of writing and handcrafts, and do both for recreation;  colouring has taken me into a new realm of Relaxation and Serenity.

I encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and try it as the calmness and serenity it generates is good for the body as well as the soul.
